I love the southwest scenery..the mountains, the red rock, the canyons, the flash flooded arroyo, the endless roadways...flat out for miles or piercing the walls of canyons...trestle, rail road bridges...and especially the BIG vast and dramatic
sky! So I tried to combine them all into one painting.
Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. This painting ended in particular fun because I ended with a quick, spontaneous swath of what a curator in NYC called my "distinctive markmaking". I know it sounds like kindergarten and it is almost as much fun. It takes minutes after days of painting. I always go right to left and bottom to top in circling the canvas for the final strokes. A certain freedom comes from a different approach to making marks. I welcome your comments...
