Thank you. I know what you mean about inventing expressionism...If it comes naturally then it is really only about others giving a label to what we do. Your use of the fauvist adjective ffor my use of color is a compliment...When the college banned my Innocents from being hung last week I said it is gestural like Richter, colorful like fauvists, and controversial only as Cezanne once was...like WHAT is the matter with you people! I'm expressionistic in my language as well as my art I guess....

Thank you for your comment on my work. I am an Expressionist painter from Romania and I love Expressionism since I was young. I have a motto which I usually put in front of my written papers on my Expressionist world: If Expressionism has not existed , I would have invented it. I think your world is very expressive and I love your fauvist colours.

I just love this work of art Betty. So simple and yet it says everything. And thanks so much for your comments on my etching "L'amour que j'n'ai pas donné".

Betty Pieper replied:

Thanks, Rochelle. Your comments mean a lot. When I finished this work I wondered if it had the strength of meaning I intended.

This was actually hard to paint...Maybe it is a self portrait more than I knew at the time. Nothing seemed to go well. I'm pleased you like the purple table. You can see it was red and maybe other colors...and scraped off. There was a lot of emotion going into the work. I like that it communicates on that level.

This has so much feeling, accentuated by the purple table and tall windows. A strong fine work. v f

This is absolutely fantastic!!! Instant v/f

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you, Lenore. I can't get the colors just right in a photo but I also like this painting so I'm especially pleased that you do as well.

Very touching work!

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you. I love to paint expressionistic but I also love structure. It's nice to know it works to convey some emotion.

Artist's Description

This woman seems alone. Wholly alone. Perhaps the red heart shaped chair backs imply a lost love or at least a broken heart which can come from many causes. I know this feeling intimately but did not set out to portray it. As almost always I start with abstract masses and play with shapes and colors. Sometimes I just go where the paint takes me.

About Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. How did this itinerant childhood influence her art? "I learned...
