Thank you, Chana. I love your intellect and criticism and here the way you put together so much that requires not only the question but the visual memory to put it together. It is very valuable insight. I want to go right now to those two artists while I can make the time...Again, thanks.

I saw a comment today by Bernard Goodman, one of my favorite FAA abstract artists, to Val Stokesand he mentions how her leaving certain lines unconnected to others created volume. Then I thought, that's it, what Betty accomplishes that makes these early works so special, so a breath of fresh air. It's all these volumes made with very light color that makes the painting have a voluminous lightness and play, and something the eye and heart delight in every time it is viewed, once more as if for the first time.

A real work of art Betty, this piece is exceptional! The shape and colour combination lead you eye from top to bottom. To not like and fav would be a crime against humanity :)

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you, Ryan. I'm not sure I can paint like this again...Some things you can only do when you are young and it's hard to 'unevolve'. Still I have returned to oils lately just to reclaim some of that subtle layering. P.S. I'm so pleased to see you painting now!

After I wrote this I had a feeling this was the case. But really Betty, it is a gift and I am sure you are creating building blocks and this part will be coming through in your new work in some way.

Betty Pieper replied:

Thanks. Everything is evolution, isn't it? If/when time permits I hope to go back to look at the progressions (or regressions based on our tastes) of some artists as you studied Hans Hoffman. Optimism is the key and "keeping our brushes wet" I suppose! Alway appreciative, Betty

You'll be disappointed to hear it is indeed a painting I did as a wild young woman! I like these high key works, too, which skate on the edge of representational but with modern voice. I'm looking through dozens of large charcoal studies from those days and thinking to do some high key paintings. We'll see. Thanks for your encouragement.

Gorgeous Betty. If this is newer work I am thrilled more may be coming. This work, this kind of work is what puts you in another class. Big fav and like Chana

About Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. How did this itinerant childhood influence her art? "I learned...
