Thanks. I was pleased a couple of years ago when it got into a juried national show and the juror was from Holland so he had a sense of humor, too.

Betty, This is a superb little painting.I love the smart art humor. So glad I found your work on FAA!

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you, Cecily. Yes with a half million artists on FAA it is a wonder we find each other or that anyone finds us. This was just fun to imagine and to paint. I visited your site and found Feeding the Pigeons one of the best works I've seen.

Thanks for the feature! From my vision for this work I've started to appreciate de kooning much more and didn't realize that like Picasso - and so many of us who later chose abstracting - he was a fine draftsman early on.

Betty Pieper replied:

Thanks so much. I can just hear the kids saying, "But Mom, maybe someday I'll be famous. You shouldn't squelch my creativity."

Artist's Description

In preparing this small canvas some of the lines reminded me of a child's stick figure...and I thought "What kind of figure would dekooning have done as a little boy?" And having put it on a wall, "What would his mother have done?" This was a fun painting with some serious commentary on creativity, how art is interpreted, our primary influences as artists, punishments for kids and other heavy thoughts.

About Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. How did this itinerant childhood influence her art? "I learned...
