Really nice relaxed scene !

Betty Pieper replied:

Thanks so much. I think that is a lovely comment and what I was aiming for when all the controversy took me by surprise. I enjoyed visiting your gallery and was happy to see that you had a solo show in a nice space, Michael. Your work deserves that recognition.

Thank you, Alfred. I love your icon representing you! By the way so, so many years ago my ancestors came from Fu"rth, Bavarian region of the Father Land. I found one painting of yours that should be in an artist textbook on what good art is.....

Wonderfully done, Betty. love your work. F/l

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you. I've never had a painting 'banned' before....Not selected by a juror, yes, but never banned from a public building for being 'too graphic". Good to receive kudos.

Thank you, Anand. Especially appreciate these comments today speaking to composition, colors and style!

A surprising thing happened to me today. My joyous "Innocents" is banned in Schenectady...at least in an exhibit by Schenectady Art Society at the community college. I dragged it out in zero degree weather, snow walls of six feet, winds that ripped the paper backing to shreds....with high hopes that someone might see, like and buy the work. Instead I got a call to pick it up again. "Too graphic." One of our members said "There is a fine line between art and pornography". WHAT!

Really wonderful painting Betty! Love! L

Betty Pieper replied:

Sincere thanks, Veikko! It was wonderful to do a fast, gestural work again.

Wow, Viva....What a majestic tribute. That just could not make me happier...your reaction to the work itself and your insight about 'knowing'.......The curator of a nearby gallery said Friday night that he thinks we get 'smarter' with our art as we age and he was surprised at this being maybe the longest in process (I guess doing nothing for 50 years can be 'in process') painting he had heard about. His wife reminded him of a man who worked as a janitor in the Smithsonian for years and after his death his friends found a huge temple-like sculptured, built piece he'd worked on for over SIXTY years. But his work was continuous....You are spot on that there seemed to be a reason for my not approaching it...my husband restretched wrinkles out of the canvas but I never laid a brush to it...I just felt I wasn't 'ready'. I am so pleased that you like what I finally did!

Beautiful composition with two female nudes, Betty! Love your style, your chromatic and your confident line! LF

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you so much, Mona. I especially appreciate the specific feedback on the work.

Thank you, Madalena...I could not be more pleased. Honestly this style is probably more associated with male painters...Not that people like Alice Neely and others weren't doing it but that they were never acknowledged. Finishing this work made me happy on a couple of levels, one being reclaiming women painting women as your group often features!

Beautifully painted, Betty !!! Wonderfully composed !! L/F

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you so much, Helena. It felt like a life time accomplishment to bridge half a century and paint so fast and loosely. I'm glad you like it!

Thank you, Chana! I will look at and ponder that soon and also I will love to look at your favorites. After the weekend from hell with our son we landed in the ER (again) and at one point I had been up for 42 hours except to dose a couple of down times...I just got home. Carl and I try to cover at least 16 hours or more every day while Jeff is hospitalized. But it helps just to check in at the art world for quick renewals!

I was just looking at my favorites to find this, and really Betty, it stood out amidst a page of wonderful art work (go see for yourself on my favorites p age 1).It has that extra something that seems to be happening with color dynmics in the center part, that makes the whole gestalt POP!

Thank you my gracious and perceptive friend! I learn about myself as well as my art from people like you and Ryan!

I believe the half century served you with this Betty. The youthfullness of the women rests inside of a mature hand. It is settled and comfortable, like a Matisse. Gracious lines, as ever, perfect use of color .I believe this is a piece one can live with and keep experiencing it in a fresh nourishing way. like/fav

Thank you, Ryan. Your insights are often more on target than my own awareness. I found myself so at one with the younger self that it went quickly and to my satisfaction. And if I doubted that I have a strong and unified artist 'voice' this and your comment reassure me! I hope you will live a rich old life and be able to connect to your early work as well someday.

Amazing work Betty, One could almost say the piece has a reflective element about it. The Betty from 1964 and the Betty from today. A fav from you folio. Masterpiece.

Thank you, Julie. You know me...I always finish what I start and then again I often start (again) what I finish. So far no repainting..just the quick execution and letting it be.

I love the rhythm and bold colors and lines. Very nice.

About Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. How did this itinerant childhood influence her art? "I learned...
