Charlotte..Thanks for writing. I first fell for your own prickly pear and other beautiful flora in our southwest and then saw your unique work combining working people and the history of Canada...the artist tributes. You have a vast and important body of work. While I am sorry about the hand tremor I am NOT surprised you do not let it stop you. Your art is as much from your head and heart as your hand so never forget that. Betty

I AM PAINTING CONSTANTLY BUT THE WORK TAKES FOREVER TO COMPLETE AS I AM INDECISIVE ABOUT MIXING COLOUR AND FIGHTING A TREMOR IN MY HAND. BUT I LOVE DOING IT NO MATTER WHAT IT TURNS OUT LIKE. OH I TRULY LOVE THE FRESHNESS OF YOUR WORK AND YOUR PALLET.

HI BETTY ! LOVE YOUR WORK AND YOUR COLOURS.. YOU MENTIONED KNOWING ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND ONE IN PARTICULAR - BOOKS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT HIM AND IF YOU GOOGLE KEN KIRKBY YOU WILL LEARN LOTS ABOUT HIS AMAZING LIFE AND HIS ARTISTIC SUCESS INCLUDING HOW HIS ART CONTRIBUTED TO CANADA'S HISTORY. OTHER PEOPLE HAVE WRITTEN BOOKS ABOUT HIM BUT NOW HE IS WRITING A HUMOROUS VERSION WITH NANA (MY DAUGHTER) EDITING AND TYPING. I EATEN UP THE OTHERS BUT CAN'T WAIT TO READ THIS ONE NOT JUST FACTS AND ADVENTURES BUT THE HUMOUR IN HIS LIFE AND HE IS SO FUNNY. I REALLY THINK YOU WOULD ENJOY TO GOOGLE HIM.

This is GREAT! I love the fast feeling of this boat. It really captures the sail when the wind is blowing. I love this angle. It makes me feel like I'm at the helm.

Betty Pieper replied:

This is a great boost...that you could relate. I painted this very quickly.

Artist's Description

This painting was inspired by a photo taken by colleague and sailor Les Parker. (Permission granted for my contemporary approach!) Even when I see rolls of canvas awaiting stretching and gesso, it reminds me of the real deal against the sky. I can't get used to seeing those new America Cup contenders with sails above and below water that seem more like wings of planes and fly about the same.

About Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. How did this itinerant childhood influence her art? "I learned...
