I fell upon this about the once famous art critic Clement Greenburg - who loved Hans Hoffman as you do. He apparently found the early small works of Jackson Pollack “much more conclusive… among the strongest abstract paintings I have yet seen by an American." My "Talented Proxy" recently put one of your small pieces on her favorite list.

FAA is running a video created to show possibilities in promotion, using the wonderful work of Jane Davies,artist/teacher/ Vermont ..The largest size she has on her site is 10x10. Many are 4x 4.mentioned as an encouragement .

Yes, I agree that various dimensions bring out different aspects of us as artists. I definitely feel that about something as encompassing as my home...I want what I want where I want it. I will hunt for months for fabric, design a coffee table, stained glass, whatever it takes to make it the picture I want to be in! I also relate to the amazing 'group awe'...when strangers react in the same way to the same art work. Thanks for sharing the experiences.

Asian couple, hope that part made sense enough

Small, large, each brings out another part of an artist. I have felt at times that small is more challenging.I was at the Met in NYC in the Modern Masters Wing with paintings of Dali(I think).I didn't relate to any. A young Asian co around by me. Then we came to a very small piece, 8x 7 max. It was stunning. All three of us gasped. I had the same experience with Hans Hoffmann's work at the MOMA..

Oh, Chana....you are such a good critic that it is always an especial pleasure to hear such a good review. I can think of nothing as fine for an artist as to be both visually intriguing and calming at the same time. To me I found that although I am addicted to the large works I can become so intense about little pieces as well. I think of Matisse with his long stick extensions to paint and think maybe a few small works in my old age will be a good pursuit!

This immediately caught my attention, not surprised it is by you because of the inherent kind of balance and depth on a planal surface that runs through your work. Both calming and visually stimulating Betty. like/fav

Very nice. Different from the rest. I like it.

Betty Pieper replied:

Thank you! To me it "feels" like a wonderful tiny swatch of textile. On occasion I hang favorite fabrics on a line while painting to influence the atmosphere....many artists use music this way.

About Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper

Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. How did this itinerant childhood influence her art? "I learned...
