Artist's Description
This started out as my favorite bird...but became mysterious, elegant...almost
an icon and to me as beautiful as our national eagle. I carried the southwest
feel to his tail feathers.
About Betty Pieper
Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. Thank you. Interesting that you used the word mysterious because in playing with paint and the surface of the paper the form just "emerged"...and thus it is mostly negative painting around his essence I appreciate your comment very much.

A Wonderful Strong, yet Subtle Colored Painting of this Raven with an Intriguing and almost Mysterious Presence and Character. Excellent Art ! :-)
Betty Pieper
Thanks, Viva! I do love this guy and you are an experienced artist who can see that it was free fun....
Maria Hunt
How very delightful, refreshing is this... truly inspired palette and composition... F/L
Betty Pieper replied:
Maria, Thank you. Because it was one of those 'messing around' mixed media it amazed me to be able to inpaint and find a raven. So far it is the only one of my own works in our dining room....
Betty Pieper
Thank you, Ryan. I wish this lowly (endlessly interesting and universal) bird was more respected. It was amazing how this fellow almost painted himself emerging mysteriously out of abstract doodling and yet he has presence. I know you love such paradoxes and if people want proof they have only to look at your site.

Fantastic piece of art Betty, this is definitely a winner is a winning portfolio. Sombre and uplifting at the same time. My fav style of art. Great job! F/L
Betty Pieper
Thank you, Joyce. I like the idea that you 'pinned' him, too. I don't do any social media but I like the idea of more people seeing him and may enter him in a national juried show. We'll see.

Your raven is beautiful... surrounded by all the wonderful textures as well! L/f and Pin
Betty Pieper
Thank you, Theresa. I love that they seem to be 'universal' and when I go to places that seem far afield, they are there. That and the way their feathers shine in the sun.
Theresa Tahara
Love Ravens and this one is wonderful. Great colours and textures too. f/l

This lil man is well worth the double mat Betty! Great work! Love it, and I see we have another bird in common with your blue bird. We have Bob and Lila on the farm for several seasons now. Your blue bird photos are wonderful as well. L/F and followed.
Betty Pieper replied:
Thanks for the generous comment. I loved hearing that your crows' murder has grown over the years. As far as the bluebirds...I was amazed how friendly the first male was. The crows were more demanding than 'friendly' but did not mind 'posing' at all. Both the blues and the crows are more interactive than I could have believed.

Thank you, Tim. For anyone looking for unique and "cocky" birds...and I say absolutely beautiful...they should check out your photograph of "Young Raven". My guy just appeared out of experimental painting, but your guy is the real deal and it is amazing for us to see him up close and personal.
Tim Grams
The textures and colors are wonderful Betty!
Betty Pieper
Charlie, So nice to hear from you. I actually hung this bird in my dining room with an expensive double mat!
Betty Pieper
Thanks, Laird. Returning the compliment: I love your "Ravens at Sunset" which from a distance is a great abstract design and up close just filled with color and energy. Those birds are inspiring and seem to be found in many places.
Laird Roberts
Great abstract of a raven. Very nice.
Alfred Motzer

I love this instantly, just fantastic work, as is usual for you. Gorgeous and moody! v/f/ and pin with acknowledgments.
Betty Pieper replied:
Thank you, Lenore. For the support and pin as well. I like your "Toward" series which cuts to the core of abstracting. Nice.
