This painting was the preliminary study for "Nude in the Foyer" inspired by the theme for a Juried Exhibition at Saratoga Arts Center. The prospectus challenged artists to show an unusual side of the grand old city. I immediately jumped to the glorious old Victorian mansions...with a nude in an unexpected place. I kept this one for my private collection; the other piece was accepted into the show.
Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. So nice to hear some specifics. For a year I 'hid this' - even from myself - since it was a quick study for another work and I didn't think it was 'good'. Then I pulled it out and thought....Hmm. I kind of LIKE this. My mentor always taught to rove around the whole canvas...honor it all...so maybe it worked here.
