People sometimes ask me how I get to my abstractions...Sometimes it is from years of observing details and bringing them to a support; other times it is from an experience - like seeing my only Maple denuded and felled - and I do several paintings within a short time abstracting more each time. It's kind of parting with it more softly this way.
Betty Pieper received her first set of oils at the age of ten and has been painting ever since. Her work has been selected by prominent jurors for prestigious regional and national exhibitions and is owned by people throughout the country. Before the age of five, Betty had lived on Dean Street in Brooklyn, on Forsythe Street in Manhattan, on an estate in Westchester county, and with her grandparents in rural New York. She watched her father build their house nearby only to sell it and announce a move to California. In San Bernardino she lived in a trailer park and later in a rural farmhouse without running water, then in an historic mansion with an Indian cellar. Thanks! I did this when we were losing the tree. But I had also lost spirit and any desire to paint for a long time after Jeff's injuries in 2014. Listening to Brian Rutenberg's passion for painting gave me new spirit and he talked about background as foreground. Sal Cascio called it "honoring the whole".
